CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Defense Department is reducing the number of unpaid vacation days civilian employees will be forced to take.
At Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee that will impact all 759 civilian workers. Because of federal spending cuts, the defense department was forcing civilian employees to take 22 furlough days. On Friday, that number was reduced to 14.
Workers at Westover play such a vital role in the local economy and they are essential to business at Aurora's Pizzeria.
"I think its good news and bad news," said owner Aurora Bradway. "It's good news because they are going to be working a little more so they are going to have more money to spend, but it's still kind of bad news because it's not the full week, but it is better than what it was."
The start of the furloughs will also be delayed until mid-to-late June.
