SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - We're producing more oil in the U.S. but the price at the pumps are coming down only very slowly and not by much.
The average price for a gallon of regular in the state is $3.69, down almost a dime from a month ago.
New reports show American oil production is rising.
Economists say that by 2020, the USA could become one of the top crude oil producers in the world.
But demand has fallen to its lowest levels since 2001.
The Energy Department says the price of crude is responsible for more than half the price of gasoline.
And drivers say they're still finding ways to save on gas.
Jim Terruso says, "I tell you, I try to keep my driving down to a minimum because it is so expensive. And I fill up maybe once every two to three weeks. And I only do it when I can get a bargain by going to Stop & Shop and using the gas points. "
Experts say one of the biggest reasons for higher prices is the closing or refineries for winter maintenance.
