LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - 22News has new information on a fire that destroyed a home in Longmeadow.
We spoke with the Fire Department on Thursday morning, they say that most of the family who lived in the home at 322 Frank Smith Road was away on vacation. Only one man was home when the fire started, Chief Eric Madison said. That man was able to escape and was not injured.
The fire department told 22News they have placed a call to the State Fire Marshal, but their resources are tied up in Boston helping to investigate the bombings.
Longmeadow firefighters will be back at the home on Thursday to comb through the rubble and try and determine what caused the fire. Firefighters told 22News that if they find anything suspicious, they will call the State Fire Marshal again.
Neighbors said the fire spread so quickly, flames and smoke engulfed the entire house in minutes. Dale Cotton of Longmeadow told 22News, "I heard the fire engine, I came out and the whole roof was engulfed in flames, I've never seen a fire like this ever."
Due to the damage, the owner of the home will not be able to go back inside.
