SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - There has been a lot of talk about fake online profiles after Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o claimed he was a victim of something called "catfishing".
A "catfish" is someone who pretends to be someone they're not, using social media or online dating websites. These so-called catfish are looking for romantic attention, personal information or financial report by deceiving.
"But it's just taking precautionary measures and be vigilant and aware what's going on around us," said Milagros Johnson, from the Springfield Mayor's Office of Consumer Information. "Scams are on the rise and my favorite line is that you know they say there's an app for that, well there's a scam for that."
Te'o claimed he was fooled into thinking he was dating a woman online who died of leukemia, when in fact that woman never existed. It's not clear yet who he was actually talking to.
