SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - People across the country and around the world were shocked to learn of the death of their favorite TV mob boss. James Gandolfini, famous for playing Tony Soprano, passed away at just 51 years old.
His colleagues and fans remember him as a genius, and one of the greatest actors in history. James Gandolfini, was attending a film festival in Italy when he died of what appears to be a heart attack. The actor famous for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano was just 51 years old.
"It's a wakeup call I think. My father died young. 55. Went to sleep, never woke up. It is a lot to think about," said Vita Filippone of West Springfield.
Gandolfini leaves behind a young wife, teenage son, and an infant daughter. One 'Sopranos' fan told 22News the news scared her when she thought about her own, and her family's health.
"Our parents are in their 50s right now. He was a famous actor that had access to the best doctors in the world so it could still happen to him," said Melissa Izzo of Feeding Hills.
One Springfield doctor told 22News no matter how old you are, it's important to take control of your health by knowing your family history, your risk factors, and ABC's.
"One of those is the A1C, not appropriate for everybody. That's a marker of blood glucose control. Another is blood pressure and the C is for cholesterol. Knowing your cholesterol numbers and ways to lower it," said Dr. Yarima Santiago at Doctors Express in Springfield.
Dr. Santiago said patients often don't experience any symptoms until a health scare, so she urges her own patients to stay informed, eat right, exercise, and follow up regularly.
