SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - House Speaker John Boehner wants people responsible for the IRS scandal to face jail time.
The Internal Revenue Service is accused of being overly aggressive when handling conservative groups' requests for tax-exempt status. The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation.
Many people told 22News more information is necessary before jumping to any conclusions.
"I think everybody should pay their fair share so whatever the criteria is, it should be applied to everybody," said Alicia Scott of Holyoke.
"Need to do a lot more research," said Annie Christoni of Derby, Vermont. "There needs to be a lot more investigation, and if there is somebody that's targeting, then they definitely should be held responsible for what they've been doing."
Attorney General Eric Holder says investigators will review potential civil rights violations, false statements and potential violations of the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in partisan political activities.
