UNCASVILLE, Conn. (WWLP) - Mohegan Sun is upping the ante. 22News has some new information about their plans in Palmer.
Mohegan Sun's casino proposal in Palmer keeps getting bigger.
Mohegan Sun's latest plans in Palmer are the most expensive in western Massachusetts. Their latest plan is close to $1 Billion. Both Hard Rock in West Springfield and MGM Springfield currently have close to $800 million proposals.
"I think It's even more than reactionary I think it really highlights Palmer's unique assets," said Palmer Town Councilor Paul Burns.
Aside from gambling, Mohegan Sun's plan in Palmer now includes a water park, kayaking and a zip line. Mohegan Sun told 22News they don't see a problem balancing kids and a casino.
"It's very simple we want to create a resort destination, very similar on a cruise ship you have a casino on a cruise ship and you have family recreational activities," said Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.
Mohegan Sun Massachusetts is calling its project the, "Gateway to Western Massachusetts." That is coming from the East, where there will likely be at least two other casinos. It's drawing power is important and it may have gained some more visitors this week.
(Seeing that it looks like Worcester isn't going after a slots license, even though that's not in the West region, does that enhance the profile of Palmer's plan?)
"We try not to look at what's happening around us, we try to look at what we need to do to create the opportunity to win the license," said Etess.
Etess says that license may not be awarded now until April, originally it was February. He told 22News Mohegan Sun is still on track to sign a host community agreement with Palmer next month and hold a referendum in September.
