HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Twenty-six year-old Rey-De Santana is a member of the father’s training group at the new Family Resource Center in Holyoke, where parents work with other parents to cope with family problems that might lead to child abuse.
Santana told 22News that his son is physically disabled.
“So when my daughter came along, it was kind of a hard time. She started out going through he terrible two's at one, and I didn't know what to do and I decided to talk with Roy,” he said.
Roy is Roy Lichtenstein, who counsels young parents at the Family Resource Center, and helps them work out their problems.
“I've seen him grow into a great individual. Loving father, loving partner to his partner and just constantly comes to group, ‘tell me more, tell me more’” he said.
Lichtenstein said that these family programs are the result of the high rate of child abuse and neglect in Holyoke. He is confident that as more young parents help each deal with their problems as Rey-De Santana has, the problem of child abuse with eventually become less severe.
The center is located at 301 Main Street in Holyoke and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. and 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., except on Wednesdays, when it closes at noon.
