SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The small but vibrant Western Massachusetts Dominican community had much to celebrate in Springfield Saturday.
American citizens born in the Dominican Republic gathered at Springfield City Hall for the 13th annual flag raising ceremony. It's a celebration of their heritage and the Dominican Independence Day.
Yissel Rosario told 22News, the celebration also includes how welcome they've been made to feel here in the Pioneer Valley.
"A beautiful thing that the city of Springfield has devoted this day to us and allowed us to raise our flag and very grateful for that," said Yissel Rosario.
Since members of the Dominican Community have settled in Holyoke as well as Springfield, each year Holyoke also honors its newcomers with a flag raising ceremony just as Springfield does.
