SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - October is breast cancer awareness month.
On Tuesday, the Gandara Center held a event in forest park to help bring awareness to the disease.
Health workers were on site to provide information about the importance of early cancer screenings, as well as healthy food and snacks.
Sharon Hall-Smith from the Gandara Center told 22News the organization provides resources for people who may not otherwise get screened.
"We have a program that helps people get educated about breast cancer and helps them to get in for their mammograms if they're having any trouble around insurance or other barriers that might exist," Hall-Smith told 22News.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors currently in the United States.
