CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The names of two western Massachusetts police officers killed in the line of duty have been added to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C.
Thousands of police men and women from around New England and across the country came to Springfield last June for the final salute to Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose .
Ambrose was a 39-year veteran of the Springfield Police Department.
He was shot and killed last June 4th while helping a woman involved in a restraining order situation.
Police said Shawn Brian, a New York Corrections Officer, shot and killed himself after shooting and critically wounding his girlfriend, and killing Officer Ambrose.
An estimated six thousand brothers and sisters in blue marched through the streets of Springfield to pay tribute to Officer Kevin Ambrose, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and public servant.
The funeral procession was led by Officer Ambrose' police cruiser driven by a close colleague.
Officer Ambrose was known for his helpfulness, his sense of humor, and his love of the job, which he continued to perform, well past his retirement eligibility.
