SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A German festival was Americanized in Springfield Saturday night.
This is the sixth year that Rudi Scherff and his friends have organized an Oktoberfest celebration in Springfield. They came up with the idea after going to an Oktoberfest in Germany years ago.
The first couple of years they held their fest in the parking lot behind the Paramount Theater, but tonight it was held in the parking lot between Fort and Worthington Streets. They set up tents, had live music, authentic German food, and of course, the beer.
“We've got a beautiful parking lot that the city built, a few trees out there,” said Scherff. “We have a band, some beer, and brauts, and everybody is having a great time.”
The fest was sponsored by the Student Prince restaurant, the New England Farmworker's Council and 1600 Main International Biergarten.
