AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - The names of three Western Massachusetts humanitarians were added to the "Order of William Pynchon" Thursday night.
Several hundred people filled Chez Josef in Agawam where the medal, named for the founder of Springfield, was awarded by the Advertising Club of Western Massachusetts.
The William Pynchon Award goes to people who typify the ideals of active citizenship and the building of a better community.
Steve Hayes, who is Drama Instructor and founder of Stage West, was honored with the award. He told 22News, "I have known many people who have received this, who I think are great people in the community. And to find myself in their company is quite an honor."
Fellow honoree Ellen Freyman, humanitarian and founder of "On Board, Inc.", said, "Legendary figures have won this award. And to be in their company, to be in this league, is just amazing."
Robert Perry, a tutor and a supporter of Habitat for Humanity, was likewise honored. He said, "It's all about blessings, and I've received so many blessings in all my life. Every day is an opportunity for me to give back, and I don't see that changing any time soon."
22News Morning Anchor Rich Tettemer served as Master of Ceremonies for Thursday's presentations of the Order of William Pynchon, which was established in 1915.
