SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Smokers who live in Springfield public housing will have to find a new place to light up, as a smoking ban has taken effect prohibiting smoking both inside and outside .
Indoor smoking has been banned for the last year across all Springfield Housing Authority properties, but starting Monday, it is banned on all of their grounds as well.
Nelson Pinette, a smoker who has lived at the Saab Court apartments for the last three years, told 22News he's heading off the property to smoke now, but it's not going to be easy for other residents, particularly elderly smokers.
"It doesn't bother me, I go by the rules, I go by the contract" Pinette said. "But it's going to hurt a lot of people, old people, especially the old people that smoke."
SHA Executive Director, William Abrashkin said the ban has a good-health goal and "we want to make our properties healthy places to live and work."
