WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) - The high winds Wednesday night and Thursday morning brought down trees and power lines across western Massachusetts; causing road closures and detours in several communities.
In Wilbraham and Longmeadow, parts of two major roads have been shut down.
Shaker Road (Route 192) in Longmeadow is closed from Laurel Street to Hazardville Road- this is in the area of the Longmeadow Country Club. Police Capt. John Stankiewicz told 22News that this is due to a large limb that took down a power line around 6:00 A.M. The incident caused a fire, and WMECo had to cut power to the area, though electricity has since been restored.
You can take Longmeadow Street (Route 5) or Frank Smith Road as an alternate north/south route across Longmeadow.
In Wilbraham, Springfield Street is closed from Stony Hill Road to Faculty Street. Traffic is being re-routed around the area. Wilbraham police estimate that the effort to clear the debris could last through the morning into the afternoon.
Town residents were notified of the closure through an automated phone call that went out in the early morning hours.
If you are trying to get east or west across Wilbraham, you are advised to take either Tinkham Road or Boston Road.
Several other area roads are closed, including a section of Sumner Avenue in Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood.
