SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A plan for drug testing welfare recipients is still on hold in Florida.
A federal appeals court upheld a temporary ban on the new law; saying that Florida failed to show a "substantial special need" to test recipients as a condition of their receiving benefits.
Springfield's James Bess told 22News he is torn on the issue.
"The government has to do what they have to do with the money that's given out, if you're getting assistance from the government," Bess said. "In a way they should (test welfare recipients for drugs), but that's kind of bizarre."
At least eight states have already considered welfare drug testing requirements this year, and are waiting on the outcome of this legal challenge.
