SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - When a disaster strikes a lot us want to help the people in need. The 22News I-Team has a warning about the people who prey on that goodwill.
If you want to donate to a relief fund, make sure you know where your money is going.
Alicia Zoeller of Springfield is a tornado survivor herself. Thursday night she got a call from a company saying they were raising money for the Red Cross and Salvation Army for Oklahoma tornado relief. Zoeller told 22News the pitch just didn't sound right.
"It raised some questions about who are these folks? Was the money really going to get tornado victims in Oklahoma, why was the Red Cross and the Salvation Army farming out their fundraising at this time. It certainly raised some red flags", says Zoeller.
We talked to the Red Cross they told 22News they do not use 3rd parties to raise money during disasters. If you get a call from the Red Cross always call the local chapter before you donate to verify the person is who they say they area.
If you feel you've been a victim or have received a questionable call, you can report it with the Red Cross through this link to their website .
