SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's a proposal that was first introduced back in 2009, now the Springfield Chamber of Commerce is once again pushing for increasing Springfield Mayor's salary from $95,000 to $135,000.
22News asked Affiliated Chambers Executive Director Jeffrey Ciuffreda if the salary increase would mean higher taxes for Springfield residents. According to Ciuffreda the City Council should be able to find a different way to find that $40,000 difference out of the city's $550 million budget.
Ciuffreda said increasing the salary will mean some long term benefits. "The Mayor of Springfield oversees over 6,000 employees. The budget is over $550 million. We just felt that if you made that a fair salary, quite frankly, you would get qualified candidates that would take a look at it and maybe stay in it."
"I think Springfield is evolving and growing," said Carmela Blair of Springfield. "A lot of changes are happening, and I think he's made it possible. Yeah, I'm okay with it."
