SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Murdered Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose was a coach, a father, a grandfather, and a husband. Following his tragic death, the community he worked to protect is giving back.
Just two days after Ambrose's murder, Rock 102 and Lazer 99.3 teamed-up for a special donation drive in memory of the fallen officer.
The proceeds from the drive will be put in a special memorial fund that will go towards things like scholarships that will honor the 36-year police veteran.
The meaning behind this donation drive, however, goes far beyond just raising money in Officer's Ambrose's memory. It's also a great opportunity for the community to come out, show their support, and remember and honor those heroes just like Officer Kevin Ambrose.
"We just wanted to come out and pay our respects to the fallen officer," said John O'Brien, co-host of the "Bax & O'Brien Show" on Rock 102. "This hasn't happened in a long time in Springfield, and hopefully it won't happen again."
"It isn't just a cop that died in the line of duty," said co-host Mike Baxendale. "This is someone's neighbor, someone's friend, someone you saw around town; someone who was an intricate part of this community and is now no longer with us because he was doing his job."
What happened Monday, is just a haunting reminder of what police officers face each and every day; putting their lives on the line for the sake of protecting others.
