NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Six college students got on their bikes Sunday and took a ride through western Massachusetts, to raise awareness about the potential dangers of fracking.
Fracking is the process of collecting natural gas from underneath the ground.
Water is mixed with sand and chemicals and fired into the earth, fracturing shale rock and releasing natural gas.
But it's those chemicals that anti-frackers say can leach into the groundwater and contaminate reservoirs.
Matt Menezes told 22News, "Other states like New York have issued a moratorium on fracking were it's already been underway and caused potentially irreparable damage to the water supply. We want to head that off in Massachusetts before it starts."
A bill going through the state legislature would ban fracking in the state.
The students say there needs to be a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
