SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - During the past several days, disaster relief volunteers for the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross have helped eight families at seven Springfield-area fires .
Regional Response Manager Mary Nathan told 22News that they usually go to 100 fires during the fiscal year. They have already gone to 98 with three months remaining in the fiscal year.
Helping people at this time of need has drained their resources.
"We see people at the lowest point in their lives. We're targeting the disaster care needs, we make sure they've got a roof over their heads, some food, some clothing, and some guidance what to do next," Nathan said.
The Red Cross could use cash donations. They're also appealing for more disaster relief volunteers. To find out how you can help out the local Red Cross, visit their website at redcrosscwm.org .
