INDIAN ORCHARD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield police are investigating whether the victim of the city's 10th homicide of the year was just an innocent bystander.
Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that the man killed in Sunday evening's shooting in Indian Orchard has been identified as John White, 38, who lived on nearby Lyons Street.
Around 5:30PM, police found White near the corner of Healey and Montcalm Streets, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died.
According to Delaney, prior to the shooting, there had been a fight between some 15-20 people at that corner. White had left his home and went to the corner, where an unknown person then pulled out a handgun and started shooting.
No arrests have been made. A neighbor told 22News that White was trying to break-up the fight when he was shot; something police are still investigating.
White's brother told 22News that the victim was a New York native and a father of five, who moved to Springfield for a better life for his children and family. He also leaves behind 12 silblings.
