HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A man has died after being shot multiple times on the corner of Beech and Dwight Streets in Holyoke.
Police Lt. Larry Cournoyer told 22News that officers found the 35 year-old man, who had been shot multiple times outside 815 Dwight Street, around 5:30 Tuesday evening.
According to Lt. Matthew Moriarty, officers were able to get to the area of the shooting very quickly due to the fact that Community Policing officers were nearby and heard the shots fired.
"The officers were riding bicycles equipped with first aid kits, and were able to assist the victim when they arrived," Moriarty said.
The victim was rushed to Baystate Medical Center , where he later died.
Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time, however they said he lived in the city.
State Police and the Holyoke Detective Bureau are investigating this case, and they're still trying to follow-up on leads Wednesday morning.
Witnesses told police that they saw two men around the time of the shooting, riding away on a red scooter. They were wearing black helmets and black hooded sweatshirts.
This is the first homicide the city of Holyoke has seen in over a year and a half. On January 3rd, 2013 Holyoke celebrated an entire year without a single murder in the city.
The last murder to take place in Holyoke was on the night of Nov. 27, 2011, when 19-year-old Jefforey Johnson was found shot in the chest at his home, located at 101 Beech Street.
