AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - The partial shut down of the country's largest employer has now entered its 5th day.
“A. It should not be happening. B. It's both sides problem. It's not just one; it's both sides. Everyone's being, they are all being stubborn,” said Lizzie Cross of Agawam.
Nearly one million workers were furloughed. As a result, programs like Head Start are strapped for cash. The Center for American Progress says 57,000 children were dropped from the program nationwide. Some voters say they are losing confidence in government.
“That's who's going to hurt the most, the children. You can say anything you want to them but it doesn't mean they're going to do anything at all for you. It's been that way for a long time no matter what party you are talking to, they do the same thing,” said Bill Fitzgerald of West Springfield.
The impact has already reached western Massachusetts. Earlier this week, 22News told you how those looking for help keeping their homes warm this winter will see a delay in services.
"We're not answering the phone; we don't have an ability to return phone calls. We have no money to do any mailings. We are certifying paperwork that we have in house. Other than that we've shut down operations. If money doesn't come to us by November 1st, we will not be able to authorize any fuel deliveries for anybody who's out of heat,” said Community Action Fuel Assistance’s Director, Peter Wingate.
And after nearly half of the FDA's workforce was sent home Tuesday, fewer food inspectors are on the clock. Experts say if this shutdown continues, you'll be paying more at the grocery store.
“They need to realize what its like for the normal person to live. And come down of their high horses and get back to work. And put everything back into place. There are people out there who need the aid they get,” said Tina Lawrene of Chicopee.
On Saturday morning, the House passed a bill that would grant retroactive pay to federal employees who have been furloughed. But just how much longer they'll have to wait until the government is running again is still up in the air.
