NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Smith College is waiting on permission from the city of Northampton, to demolish three buildings at its Northampton campus.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the school wants to clear the way, so it can build new student housing. But before it can move forward with this project, the city of Northampton must approve of the demolition.
The buildings that would be demolished include:
- The Mason Infirmary
- Sunnyside Child Care Center
- A vacant home
The Northampton Historical Commission has scheduled a public hearing to determine whether two of the buildings--the old Daycare facility and the house--should be preserved.
Those two buildings were built in the late 1880's, and are both over 120 years old.
