SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) - Medical marijuana may be legal in Massachusetts, but the town of Southwick has adopted a policy prohibiting police officers from using medical marijuana, legal or not.
Southwick Police Sgt. Rhett Bannisch told 22News that Southwick's Police Chief crafted the policy, and brought it to the Board of Selectmen, which approved it last month.
One concern is that marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
There is also concern about someone on this type of medicine carrying a firearm.
Massachusetts voters approved legalizing medical marijuana in a 2012 ballot question. The state is currently working on developing rules for dispensaries.
