INDIAN ORCHARD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield police say they caught an ice cream lady and a truck driver buying drugs from a woman they let inside their "Ding Dong Cart."
Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that officers caught Tricia Martins, 39, of Ludlow selling morphine to Joshua Gibbs, 26, of Springfield, and Sarah Christian, 33, of Chicopee.
According to Delaney, neighbors had complained to police about people selling drugs in the parking lot at Main and Milton Streets in Indian Orchard. On Wednesday night, narcotics officers set up surveillance in the parking lot. Around 9:20, they saw Martins sitting in her Nissan Quest minivan for about 10 minutes until the ice cream truck approached with Gibbs behind the wheel, and Christian in the back as the ice cream lady.
Delaney says officers saw Martins leave her minivan and enter the Ding Dong Cart. Once inside, police allegedly observed her selling morphine tabs to Christian and Gibbs.
Delaney says Martins then left the truck with cash, but without any ice cream.
Officers then surrounded the truck and arrested the three.
On searching Martins' minivan, Delaney says officers found alarge amount" of Oxycontin and morphine pills.
Martins is charged with distribution of morphine, possession of morphine with intent to distribute, and possession of Oxycontin with the intent to distribute. Christian and Gibbs are charged with possession of morphine. All three suspects were arraigned Thursday.
According to Delaney, after the suspects were arrested, Christian was allowed to call her father to take the truck away, so that the ice cream would not melt.
