SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The polls are now open in the city of Springfield, and after months of debate, the voters are now deciding whether MGM's plan for a Springfield casino will move forward.
The polls will stay open until 8:00 P.M.
22News has been told the ballot question will read something like this:
"Should the City of Springfield permit a casino gaming establishment in the city's South End?"
This is the only question voters will have to answer, and they will make their decision by marking off "yes" or "no".
Residents can find a list of polling locations on the Springfield's official website .
In order to advance its proposal to the state level, MGM needs a "yes" vote. Otherwise, they'll have to withdraw their current application from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
If the "yes" side wins, the Commission still has to pick Springfield's proposal over other proposed casinos in western Massachusetts. Hard Rock wants to build a casino in West Springfield while Mohegan Sun has plans for a resort in Palmer. Voters in both of those communities have yet to decide whether to advance those proposals.
It's hard to predict the outcome of Tuesday's vote, considering that it is so dependent on who shows up to cast their ballots. Springfield's Election Commissioner said Sunday that voter turnout could approach 25%.
