SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - According to the FBI data analyzed by the Neighborhood Scout, the City of Springfield is one of the top 100 most dangerous cities in America.
Now some residents are determined to make their city safer, one neighborhood at a time.
Hector Flores of Springfield told 22News, “We are going to put a stop to this. We are working together as a community. We are working with the police department.”
In the Brightwood section of Springfield, the biggest concern is the recent string of car and house break-in's. The neighborhood association believes there have been at least 12 break-in's last month.
Ada Gonzalez of Springfield said her house was broken into in broad daylight recently. “Luckily for my alarm and the dog, it alerted my neighbor right next door, and the cops were there within minutes, but I feel violated because that is my home.”
Carmen Santana of Springfield said the lack of street lights is also a problem. She told 22News “They have the perfect opportunity because there's no lighting on the street. It's complete darkness, and we need the lighting.”
These residents hope standing up as a neighborhood will help improve the city.
Springfield was ranked as the 77th most dangerous city in America by the Neighborhood Scout. They looked at the number of violent crimes reported to the FBI and calculated the crime rate.
Springfield's rate was 59 incidents per 1,000 people.
Mayor Domenic Sarno told 22News the City is stepping up downtown patrols, and the crime rate is on the downward trend.
“At times, negative activities will occur in urban America. We'll continue to conquer those activities. We have officers walking the beat. We have officers going in and out of parking garages,” said Sarno.
Brightwood neighbors will meet again Wednesday October 2nd to discuss putting up more street lights and turning on porch lights.
