SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Fire Department is working to improve the safety of the city's growing immigrant population.
The department was awarded a $5,000 grant Tuesday as part of the "Multi-Language Public Education Fire Safety Initiative". The program focuses on teaching fire safety to the city's Somali, Russian, Vietnamese and Latino immigrant residents.
"We have some instances where there are very unsafe cooking practices taking place," said Fire Marshal David Rivera. "We just want to go in there and reiterate to these groups so we can avert any future incidents."
English is spoken as a second language in 34% of households in Springfield, compared with 21% statewide.
