SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) - Springfield is trying to clean up the city by giving property owners a chance to buy blighted vacant lots next to their own properties.
It's called the "Abutter Lots Sales Program."
Owners of adjacent residences or businesses can buy the vacant lots if they are valued at $25,000 or less and are not needed by the city for public use.
The lots would be sold at a price of 25 cents per square foot and can be used by their new owners for a variety of purposes.
Mayor Domenic Sarno says the program can help return unused parcels to the city's tax rolls.
