SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Police have arrested 35-year-old Michael Wingfield of Springfield after allegedly leaving the scene of the car accident that killed Ashley Ballester.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News Wingfield turned himself into the Springfield Police Department at 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
Wingfield allegedly left the scene after hitting Ballester and her child who was in a stroller then she was run over by a second car that was also traveling west on Sumner Avenue.
According to Sgt. Delaney, he went to the owner's house and threw keys after stating that he just struck someone on Sumner Avenue, then Wingfield got in a cab from Kensington Avenue.
Police say he used the motor vehicle without the owner's permission. The child remains in intensive care at Baystate Medical Center.
Wingfield is being charged with:
- Motor vehicle homicide
- Negligent operation
- Leaving the scene of personal injury accident
- Leaving the scene of personal injury accident resulting in death
- Using motor vehicle without Authority
- Operating motor vehicle with a revoked license
Sgt. Delaney says Ashley Ballester was pregnant at the time of the accident. More charges might be filed against Wingfield at a later date. He will be arraigned Monday afternoon in Springfield District Court.
