SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield police officer was taken to the hospital after being hit by a pickup truck while working a construction detail Monday morning.
Springfield Police Capt. Thomas Trites told 22News that the driver kept going after striking the officer near Orange and Ranney Streets around 11:00, but police caught-up and arrested him on Sumner Avenue.
The officer was taken to the hospital, but Trites said that his injuries do not appear to be serious.
Neither the officer nor the suspect's name are being released at this time.
Trites said that the suspect is being charged with operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident.
While a routine part of the job, construction details can be very dangerous for police officers. In July, veteran Westfield Police Officer Jose Torres was killed when he was hit by a dump truck while working a construction detail on Pontoosic Road.
