SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - For the first time in the history of Springfield's police dog unit, the animals now wear badges of their own.
The Hampden County Physician Associates' office on Boylston Street donated the money to buy the badges for the dogs, in order to help raise colon cancer awareness.
Deborah Stelzer is a nurse manager at the medical practice, and told 22News that colon cancer has taken loved ones from her.
"My husband has passed, he was the Chief of Police in Springfield. He had colon cancer. My oldest sister passed away in 2001 from colon cancer," Stelzer said.
Mrs. Stelzer's son, Patrolman Scott Stelzer, is one of seven Springfield police K9 officers.
