SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield police officer has been taken to the hospital, after being hit by a car on Sumner Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Officer Adam Rodriguez, was hit near the corner of Sumner Avenue and Oakland Street around 12:00. Rodriguez was on traffic detail when he was hit by the elderly driver.
Delaney says that Officer Rodriguez has several injuries, including a concussion, a broken leg, a broken hand, and a broken ankle. He also has head and neck injuries.
Officer Rodriguez was directing traffic for the water department at the time, and his marked cruiser was parked in the westbound lane behind a water truck. He was trying to stop westbound traffic, but Delaney says the 75 year-old Longmeadow resident didn't stop his car, striking Rodriguez and sending him flying into the windshield.
Delaney said the Longmeadow driver will face multiple citations. His name is not being released at this time.
The traffic bureau is continuing to investigate the accident.
