SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial has generated strong passions. Demonstrations were held across the country over the weekend, and one will be held in Springfield on Monday to demand new charges be filed against the former neighborhood watch captain who killed Trayvon Martin.
Protesters carrying candles and bags of Skittles will rally in Court Square at 8:00 P.M. to demand the Justice Department pursue a civil rights case against Zimmerman.
In what was one of the most watched criminal cases in years, a Sanford, Florida jury decided on Saturday night not to convict Zimmerman of second-degree murder in Martin's shooting death. The prosecution had argued that Zimmerman had profiled the teen following recent crimes in the neighborhood, while the defense argued that he had acted in self defense.
