CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The owner of a Chicopee jewelry store who shot at a group of robbery suspects says he's not worried about them ever coming back.
Anthony Furnari is the owner of Furnari Jewelers on Memorial Drive. He told 22News that in 35 years in business, nothing like this has ever happened to him.
On Monday afternoon, Chicopee police say the suspects walked into the store and began assaulting Furnari. He told 22News that he believes one of the suspects had a gun.
Furnari says that he didn't take the situation seriously in the beginning. "First I thought it was a joke, but then when he jumped at me, I said ‘oh (expletive).' I knew it was for real."
Furnari says that in the struggle, he shot off his own gun three times.
"One guy, which I thought he had a gun in his right hand, with gloves and a mask, jumped over my desk. In which case I grabbed my gun and I fired three times. One I got in the chest, I thought it was the chest, but I heard later it was the abdomen. Then, we started struggling for the gun," Furnari said.
"Then it was a matter of life or death fighting for that gun, because I knew they'd use it on me. They wrestled it from me finally both of them, and they took off without shooting me, which I don't know why they didn't shoot me."
"So, I lucked out. I guess someone up there likes me," he said. Furnari was taken to Baystate Medical Center for injuries to his face and to his hand (after the gun was pulled from him) but is now back at work.
His co-worker Cindy was inside the store at the time of the robbery. She was kicked by one of the suspects, but she is fine.
Furnari says that the suspects made off with some gold chains, in addition to his gun.
Still, he says, he's not concerned that they'll return to try to rob him again.
"I ain't worried about them coming back. They know what I got, you know what I mean?" he said.
Chicopee Police Capt. Lonnie Dakin told 22News that a "person of interest" in the case brought himself to Baystate Medical Center. There is no word at this time on the whereabouts of any additional persons of interest. No arrests have yet been made.
