WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Westfield has become the latest Western Massachusetts community with concerns over a suspicious device.
The Westfield Police and Fire Departments, as well as the State Police Bomb Squad and State Fire Marshal's office were called to the Union Street watershed area round 8:00 A.M. following the report.
Jennifer Mieth, spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal's Office, told 22News that the package turned out to be a box of shoes.
The incident in Westfield is just one of several such scares in the past two weeks across western Massachusetts, with similar suspicious package incidents recently in Agawam, Southwick, Springfield, and Hadley.
Mieth says that the Fire Marshal's Office appreciates people being vigilant, and members of the public should continue to call if they see or sense things that are not normal or are out-of-place. She says that the first rule is not to touch any device you consider to be suspicious, and instead call the police.
