SPRINGFILD, Mass. (WWLP) - An elderly Agawam tax preparer pleaded guilty Thursday to one count each of tax evasion and mail fraud in Springfield Federal Court.
Courtroom Clerk for Judge Michael Ponsor Theresa Pelegano told 22News that 84 year old James Hansmann admitted he kept $408,000 he was supposed to pay to the IRS for Canterbury Construction of Westfield.
Under terms of the plea agreement, the prosecutor will recommend a sentence of three years probation to Judge Ponsor at Hansmann's January 16th, 2014 sentencing hearing.
Pelegano said a guilty plea to a charge of tax evasion carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
"He's elderly and has health issues," Pelegano told 22News. "The judge does not have to agree to the prosecutor's recommendation."
