SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) - An end of an era. MX Sports announced this month will be its final national motocross event in Southwick.
22News discovered if this really is the end of Motocross in Southwick.
In terms of a national event, it looks like it is, but the American Legion Post who own the land want to keep it here.
Southwick's famous sand track, which draws on average between 10-15 thousand people on national event weekends won't have a national event next year. MX Sports runs the AMA Pro Racing Motocross Championships. Diane Pebbles Pittello and Ralph Pittello run Moto-X 338, the promoter of the event. They lease the track's land from Southwick American Legion Post 338. The Pittello's are retiring after they told 22News they couldn't agree on a new contract with Post 338.
"We're going to work with MX sports and the national group for the purpose of trying to find something else in New England because the fans in New England deserve a national", says Track Manager Ralph Pittello.
This will be the 35th year a national motocross event will be held in Southwick. A board member of the American Legion Post 338 told 22News they're not shutting down the track and they'll have a response to this news sometime this week.
(Any chance any reconciliation happens between now and the end of the year between you and the Post?)
"I really doubt it, we've come to terms with it and I think we're ready to let go", says Pittello.
Pittello told 22News the track need a big financial investment to keep it on the national level, but was willing to do it.
(Did you want to retire or did this force your hand at what's happening in Southwick?)
"We were looking forward to doing a few more years in Southwick. It did really make our decision much quicker than we were hoping for", says Pittello.
The 338 National will be held on Saturday June 29th.
