SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - One man is in the hospital following a shooting in Springfield's Maple High-Six Corners section, which caused the temporary lockdown of three nearby schools Wednesday afternoon.
Springfield police were called to the area of Avon Place and Maple Street around 1:00 after the activation of the city's "Shot Spotter" system.
Springfield Police Officer Charles Youmans told 22News that one man had been shot, and was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where his condition is not known at this time.
Azell Cavaan, spokesperson for the Springfield Public Schools, told 22News that three nearby schools, the Milton Bradley Elementary School, High School of Commerce, and the Forest Park Middle School on School Street were put on "perimeter lockdown" for about 30 minutes due to the nearby police activity. During such a lockdown, no one may enter or exit the building.
Cavaan said that the lockdown was lifted after police cleared the area.
Police are not releasing any information on a suspect at this time.
