LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - Longmeadow police say that an incident in which a man tried to convince a teen girl to get into his van , is not related to an earlier incident involving a van at the Big Y parking lot.
According to Police Capt. John Stankiewicz, around 4:00 Wednesday afternoon, police received a report of a "disheveled and creepy"-looking driver of a white van with Texas plates at the parking lot of the Big Y on Williams Street.
About four hours later, Stankiewicz said a 16 year-old girl was walking down Frank Smith Road when a man in a white or cream-colored oversized van approached her, asked her where she was going, and if she wanted a ride. She refused, but he persisted; telling her to "hop in." The girl ran to safety at a neighbor's house, and called police.
On Friday afternoon, Lt. Gary Fontaine notified 22News that the driver of the van at the Big Y parking lot has been located, and that police do not believe that he was the same person involved in the Frank Smith Road incident. The van with the Texas plates was a Chrysler Town and Country minivan, while the girl on Frank Smith Road described a larger, Dodge Sprinter-type van.
Police are continuing to investigate tips, and Fontaine expressed appreciation for those who have brought them information.
