CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Several volunteer fire departments were awarded state grants Monday.
$70,000 in grant money was split up among 50 different communities in the state.
Monson's Fire Chief Laurent McDonald told 22News the money helps them meet basic needs. "This helps offset our budgets. It frees up money at the local level that we could use in our day to day operations. It gives us a chance to focus on specific immediate needs, in our case communications equipment."
According to Department of Conservation & Recreation Commissioner Ed Lambert, "The things that sound pretty basic, but are really difficult for local town meetings to appropriate for because times are so challenging."
