SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Police have identified the officer killed in the line-of-duty Monday afternoon as a 36-year veteran of the department.
Officer Kevin Ambrose was shot twice while responding to a report of a domestic dispute at the Lawton Arms Apartments in Sixteen Acres. The man police say shot Ambrose, Shawn Bryan, of Hempstead, Long Island, was also killed. Bryan's estranged girlfriend, Charlene Mitchell, is in critical condition at Baystate Medical Center.
During a news conference at Springfield Police Headquarters on Monday evening, Commissioner William Fitchet detailed the circumstances surrounding Ambrose's tragic death.
Mayor Domenic Sarno said that Ambrose's death serves as a painful reminder of the risk that police officers take to protect citizens.
"We grieve this remarkable officer. The whole city mourns the loss of Officer Kevin Ambrose," Sarno said.
"Officer Ambrose made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting the residents of Springfield ."
