HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - The nation's largest retailer plans to expand into Holyoke. Walmart announced Tuesday that they're planning to build a new Supercenter in the city.
The 160,000 square-foot store would be located on Whiting Farms Road between Autumn Drive and Lynch Drive. The location would put the new Walmart right between two of the city's main shopping areas; the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside and the K-Mart Plaza on Northampton Street. Walmart claims the new store will bring about 300 jobs to the area.
In a news release sent to 22News, Walmart spokesperson Chris Buchanan said that the store would include a full line of groceries, as well as a garden center. The company plans to hold meetings with city residents about their proposal.
"We look forward to working with city officials, the business community and especially the neighbors to the site, so Walmart can make this new store a popular shopping destination in Holyoke," Buchanan said.
Buchanan told 22News that they hope to have local approvals done this year, and would begin construction sometime in 2014.
Walmart already operates several western Massachusetts stores; with locations in Chicopee, Northampton, Hadley, Springfield, Westfield, Ware, Orange, Pittsfield, and North Adams.
