FEEDING HILLS, Mass. (WWLP) - A contractor will be heading to Feeding Hills on Tuesday to examine a large water pipe that broke there on Monday afternoon.
Kathy Pederson of the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission told 22News that the 54-inch main transmission line ruptured around 3:10PM in the area of East View Drive.
Pederson told 22News the pipe supplies water to Springfield's South End, and parts of Longmeadow and East Longmeadow.
The rupture in the pipe caused a large geyser to shoot high into the air. The water created a sinkhole, and then a muddy river in the field where the pipe was located.
Pederson said people may have had very low water pressure for a short period of time, and some residents in Springfield reported dirty water coming from the faucet.
The water was diverted by 4:30 Monday afternoon.
Pederson couldn't give an estimate on when a permanent fix would be in place until the nature of the repair can be determined, although she did say the repair shouldn't affect water service.
