WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Hampden County Correctional Facility officials told 22News the Westfield man and woman accused of using a 14 year old girl as a "sex slave" were still in jail as of Thursday night. That's welcome news to neighbors and child advocates.
The two may still be locked up but the harm is done and police continue to investigate whether there are other victims.
Police removed photographs and other documents from the home of Nathaniel Lami and Leonne Vieu. According to Lami's family members and neighbors, they also took his daughter.
"I don't know if I'm ever going to see my niece again, it's crazy," said Caitlain Lami the sister of Nathaniel Lami.
Neighbor Jill Russell described, "After it was done to see her taken away by DSS it was pretty sad and to have the little girl be involved and have to go through such an ordeal, it's just terrible."
The couple is accused of forcing a 14 year old girl to engage in several sexual acts. It's something Child Advocate Kathy Picard has experienced and now works to stop such abuse.
There are still young children's toys scattered around the house from where Nate Lami's young 6 year old daughter lived with him until she was taken away earlier this week and that concerns both police and people like Kathy Picard that there could be more victims.
"Most likely, most likely, because these perpetrators don't stop. You get away with it you're going to continue on. The average perpetrator has 400 victims, that is alarming but they continue on and they keep on getting these victims until it's stopped," said Picard a Child Advocate and sexual abuse prevention public speaker.
Picard said child abuse is going on more than many may think. She said statistics show one in every four girls and one in every six boys are being sexually assaulted before their 18 th birthday.
