CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Strong winds and heavy rain created a challenging commute for drivers in western Mass., Thursday morning.
Utility crews were out early tending to reports of wires and trees down in some cities and towns.
Some major roads were closed during the morning commute , including part of Sumner Avenue in Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood due to a downed tree. The road is closed between East Alvord Street and White Street. Traffic is being diverted onto side streets.
In Chicopee, 22News reporter Nicole Nalepa reported scattered debris in the roadways, including big objects like trash cans.
Here are some helpful tips before you head out in these conditions:
- Allow extra time for your travels.
- Allow extra space between other cars around you.
- Reduce speeds.
- Be alert of your surroundings (i.e. debris in the road, downed wires and trees, etc.)
If you have any downed wires or trees, call the police and your utility company immediately.
