AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - A number of students were arrested by Amherst police over the weekend, following a spontaneous party that drew about 1,000 guests.
Amherst Police were called shortly after 2:00 Sunday afternoon to the Townhouse Apartments on Meadow Street. Police Captain Christopher Pronovost told 22News that a spontaneous party quickly swelled into 1,000 students trying to pack one of the complex's quads.
Three students were arrested, and several others were cited for town bylaw violations.
Apartment complex resident Rebecca Zamdborg told 22News that she did not think things got out of control.
“I noticed a whole lot of people carrying lots of beer, and didn't seem that out of hand, it wasn't even that loud. I mostly just saw the aftermath; a whole bunch of people walking single file along North Pleasant,” Zamdborg said.
Captain Pronovost told 22News that they had to call in UMass Police to help break up the crowd.
He said that this type of incident was out of the ordinary so early in the school year.
Overall this weekend, 56 students were charged for a number of violations including alcohol, and 23 were arrested.
