BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WWLP) - A young man from western Massachusetts was one of two people killed in a head-on crash in Rhode Island Thursday afternoon, police say.
According to a news release sent to 22News by the Burrillville, R.I. Police Department, Markell Torres, 19, of Easthampton, and Shannon Heil, 19, of Burrillville died from their injuries in the crash on Route 102.
Torres was a back seat passenger in the 2001 Ford Focus that Heil was driving, when it collided with a Dodge Caravan, which was going in the opposite direction. It remains unclear just what caused the two cars to crash, and police are still investigating.
The driver of the van, Stephanie Jalette, 34, of Burrillville, was taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with what police call "serious injuries."
A third person inside the Focus, William Scurry, 21, of Woonsocket, R.I. suffered only minor injuries, and didn't have to be hospitalized. He was riding in the front passenger side at the time of the crash.
Burrillville is located in the northwestern corner of Rhode Island, on the Massachusetts and Connecticut state lines.
